Viburnum awabuki 'Chindo' is a gorgeus evergreen viburnum cultivar, growing as a dense, upright, large shrub or small tree with lustrous, dark green foliage. Multi-trunked, though occasionally with only one or two strong central leaders, 'Chindo' viburnum grows rapidly to a height of 10 to 12 feet and a width of 6 to 8 feet, putting on up to 2' in height a year and producing large clusters of small white flowers in the spring. Though not native to North America, the 'Chindo' cultivar's lightly fragrant flowers attract a number of pollinators and, when planted near a pollinating partner like another 'Chindo' or similar evergreen viburnum, flowers will turn to pink and red berries at the end of summer and persist into the fall, perfect for attracting and feeding birds too!
Viburnum awabuki 'Chindo' is an especially hardy specimen that grows best in sun to part shade in a wide range of soils; once established, 'Chindo' is also mildly resistant to damage by deer and can withstand drought and heat through the summer months. Though evergreen, this viburnum's foliage will take on reddish, purple, or bronzey hues in the cooler fall and winter months, adding even more seasonal appeal. As a low maintenance shrub in general, Viburnum awabuki 'Chindo' makes for a great privacy screen or border plant, but also serves well as a specimen tree and larger foundation plant since it responds fairly well to pruning. With its fast growth rate, dense foliage, and superb ornamental value, 'Chindo' is sure to find an excellent place in your landscape, pleasing gardeners, pollinators, and birds alike.
