'Little Adder' is a hardy, compact cultivar of giant hyssop, Agastache rugosa, an upright perennial herb native to East Asia. Although its parent species can grow to larger sizes, up to two to four feet, the 'Little Adder' cultivar is named for its compact growth habit, only growing to 15-18" tall. In addition to its compact habit, 'Little Adder' produces more profuse purple flowers than its parent species, with flower spikes lasting from the early summer well into the fall. More flowers in less space means even more pollinator power, and 'Little Adder' will attract just as many, if not more butterflies, hummingbirds, and bumblebees than other Agastache varieties.
This cultivar is additionally resistant to drought, deer, and rabbits, and makes a great addition to pollinator and container gardens, as well as border plantings, rock gardens, and any location with good drainage and part to full sun. Although Agastache rugosa is not originally native to the United States, and may spread over time via roots and seeds, giant hyssop is not considered an invasive species, though it may inadvertently hybridize with native Agastache species.
