Hydrangea quercifolia 'Munchkin' (Dwarf Oakleaf Hydrangea) Unity Grown

Hydrangea quercifolia 'Munchkin,' commonly known as 'Munchkin' hydrangea, is a fantastic dwarf oakleaf hydrangea cultivar that is perfect for a variety of places in the home garden. Originally developed by the U.S. National Arboretum in 1997, 'Munchkin' matures to a manageable size of three to four and a half feet tall and wide with wide, bright green foliage, making it ideal for small spaces, low hedges, and foundation plantings as well as large containers. From June to July, this cultivar is noted for its striking cone-shaped flower panicles that emerge clean white and quickly mature to a beautiful antique rose hue. Flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, and 'Munchkin' gains multi-season appeal with its dark maroon fall foliage.

After fall foliage has come and gone, coarse mature stems exfoliate to reveal an attractive, chocolate brown inner bark, which adds eye-catching appeal to the winter landscape as well. This cultivar performs best in fertile soil in full to part-sun areas, and its compact form works in smaller landscapes, low hedges, and en masse, and with year-round aesthetic appeal, 'Ruby Slippers' makes an excellent addition to any part of the landscape.
