Buxus x NewGen® Freedom (Boxwood)

NewGen® Freedom is one of the newest and best hybrid boxwood cultivars on the market. Patented in 2019, NewGen® Freedom is noted for its vigor and high growth rate among other boxwood cultivars, as well as its better resilience and resistance to both major pests of boxwood plants: boxwood blight and boxwood leafminer. This cultivar is best grown in part-shade and moist, well-drained loams, though NewGen® Freedom will tolerate any level of light; green foliage may bronze slightly in winter, especially when exposed to direct sunlight, and foliage in full shade may be less dense. 

While this cultivar is faster growing than some boxwood cultivars, NewGen® Freedom may still take 15 years to reach an appropriate low hedge height around 3.5', but if given more time, it will mature to a bushier size of around 5' tall and wide. In the spring, NewGen® Freedom produces inconspicuous, white to green flowers that are attractive to pollinators, which adds to its hedge, border, and foundation planting appeal, and with the added benefit of disease and pest resistance, a hedge planted with NewGen® Freedom boxwoods should maintain its appearance for many years to come.
