Prunus maritima, commonly called beach plum, is a medium-sized, multi-stemmed shrub typically found in naturalized thickets along coastal areas in the northeastern United States. As the name beach plum implies, Prunus maritima is commonly found in sandy, coastal woodlands and sand dunes, where it grows in sandy and rocky soils, thanks to its salt tolerance. From mid spring to early summer, beach plum produces profuse white or white and pink-tinged flowers that attract a number of pollinators, including a variety of native bees. After flowers have been pollinated, they turn to small, green stone fruits that eventually mature to a dark reddish-purple color by mid to late summer; fruits are edible, although taste may vary even between fruits from the same plant, and are attractive to birds and wildlife.
While naturally occurring in thickets about 3-8' tall and wide, beach plum specimens that are more sheltered from strong coastal winds can reach heights of up to 15-20'. Tolerant of salt and poor soil conditions, Prunus maritima is an important plant for coastal pollinator gardens, and with its shrubby behavior and spreading behavior, beach plum is a great choice for dune erosion control as well. With a ton of pollinator appeal, as well as more general ecological appeal, and with its attractive leaves, bark, and flowers and edible fruits, Prunus maritima is a valuable addition to any garden, and not just those on the water.
