Taxodium distichum, commonly called bald cypress is a large, long-lived, deciduous conifer that grows to 50-75 ft. or taller. Bald cypress produces sage-green leaves that resemble feathers, turning copper-colored before falling; although it resembles an evergreen conifer, it becomes 'bald' during the colder winter months after a striking display of fall foliage.

Taxodium distichum is easily grown in average, medium to wet, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade and prefers acidic, sandy soils but can tolerate a very wide range of soil conditions, from somewhat dry, poor soils to fully flooded areas with loamy sand; in these areas, bald cypress's other telltale feature makes itself known in the form of knobby wooden knees that typically extend above the surface of the water. While these knees add a certain charm and distinctiveness to the trees, scientists still aren't entirely sure of their purpose! Taxodium distichum is extremely tolerant of a variety of conditions, and can also reach advanced ages, to the point where they are debatably one of the longest lived trees in the world.

Marylanders Plant Trees

From the Maryland Department of Natural Resources:

"We launched Marylanders Plant Trees in 2009 to encourage citizens and organizations to partner with the State to plant new trees. Today, citizens can still take advantage of our coupon program to receive $25 off the purchase of a native tree at 86 participating nurseries across the State. The State cost of $20 per coupon is funded through a settlement from a major power generator for Clean Air Act violations, in partnership with the Office of the Attorney General, and Maryland’s participating tree vendors are generously absorbing the remaining $5.

Trees must be planted in the state of Maryland to qualify for $25 off coupon.
Wholesale customers do not qualify.
