Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane' is a gorgeous, hybrid cultivar of witch-hazel, a deciduous shrub or small tree. As a hybrid, Hamamelis x intermedia crosses are the result of combining Japanese witchhazel (Hamamelis japonica) with Chinese witchhazel (H. mollis), and as such is not a native species in the US. Though not native, the 'Diane' hybrid cultivar is highly regarded for its ornamental value. As a late winter/early spring bloomer, Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane' produces clusters of small, dark red flowers with coppery, orange-red trailing flower parts, lending a gorgeous and unique pop of color to the off-season landscape.
Witchhazels the world over are typically found in understory environments, and as such, 'Diane' performs best in full sun to partial shade in areas with medium-moist, well-draining soil. Noted for its relatively compact size of 8-12' tall and wide, 'Diane' is small enough to work as a specimen planting in any number of home landscapes, while also subtle fragrance and a good food source to early season pollinators. Though the 'Diane' cultivar's true season to shine is the late winter and early spring, this Hamamelis x intermedia also looks beautiful with lush green, deeply veined leaves in summer, and bright yellow fall foliage, adding multi-season appeal to any garden.
