Veronicastrum virginicum, commonly referred to as Culver's root, is a large, upright perennial wildflower which grows in clumps up to two to four feet wide and up to seven feet tall. Commonly found in open woodlands, moist meadows and prairies, and forest margins, Culver's root is best identified by its whorled leaves, with three to seven leaves arranged in a circle around the center stem, and its large flower spikes up to nine inches long. Flower spikes of white or pink-tinged white bloom from June to August, and are especially attractive to butterflies. With maintenance and dead-heading of old blooms, the flowering season can be extended to mid-Autumn.
Highly tolerant of wet soil, Veronicastrum virginicum shouldn't be allowed to full dry out, but grows best in full sun to part-shade, so it may require additional watering through the summer. A large, upright plant with showy flowers, Culver's root make an excellent addition to meadows, pollinator and rain gardens, or as an accent piece in border and bed plantings.
