Schizachyrium scoparium 'Carousel' is a cultivar of little bluestem, a native warm season perennial grass that grows in narrow clumps. Growing to only 18-36" in drier soils and full sun, 'Carousel' little bluestem has a narrower, rounder form than some of the other little bluestem cultivars, but still makes for a highly adaptable choice in the home garden, proving tolerant to snow, rain, drought, flood, deer browsing, and a variety of soils including clay and saline conditions with the added benefit of a more compact footprint.
The 'Carousel' cultivar is an brilliantly striking addition to the home landscape; in the summer, this bluestem's foliage begins picking up pink highlights among its otherwise uniformly pale green hues, and as the fall begins to set in, 'Carousel' produces a dizzying array of fantastic circus colors, with leaves and stem joints turning coppery brown, pink, and red, all contrasting very well against its remaining greens. In addition to its color palette, 'Carousel' was also selected for its upright habit, adding interest to the landscape all winter long.
