Liatris spicata (Dense Blazing Star) is a tall, upright, clump-forming native perennial which occurs naturally in moist lowlands, meadows, and marsh margins. Typically growing 2-4' tall in cultivation, Liatris spicata can reach a height of 6' in some southern reaches of its native range. For most of its life-cycle, Liatris can be mistaken for a dense clump of grass, but come summer, dense blazing star begins flowering and produces a dense spike of fluffy, purple blooms around a central stalk. One or more of these flower stalks arise from the plant's basal leaves, and these stalks make up the bulk of the plant's height and structure.

A great pick for a wetlands project, a rain garden, or a pollinator garden, Liatris spicata flowers are attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. In addition to pollinator appeal, small seeds begin appearing in early fall and attract a variety of songbirds.
