Veronicastrum virginicum, commonly referred to as Culver's root, is a large, upright perennial wildflower which grows in clumps up to 2-4' wide and up to 4-7' tall! Commonly found in open woodlands, moist meadows and prairies, and forest margins, Culver's root is best identified by its whorled leaves, with three to seven leaves arranged in a circle around the center stem, and its large, white flower spikes up to nine inches long. These gorgeous, showy spikes of white or pink-tinged white bloom from June to August, and are especially attractive to butterflies. With maintenance and dead-heading of old blooms, the flowering season can be extended to mid-Autumn.

Though Veronicastrum virginicum is highly tolerant of wet soils, foliage and general plant health may suffer when the soil is allowed to fully dry down. Culver's root grows best in full sun to partial shade, so full sun plantings may require additional watering through the summer. As a large, upright wildflower with showy flowers, Culver's root makes an exciting addition to meadows, pollinator and rain gardens, or as an accent piece in border and bed plantings.
