Geranium 'Johnson's Blue' (Geranium)
One of the most popular blue geranium varieties on the market, 'Johnson's Blue' geranium originally hit the garden world in the 1950s. Reportedly a hybrid of Himalayan cranes-bill (H. himalayense) and meadow cranes-bille (H. pratense), 'Johnson's Blue' is noted for its ornate, deeply incised foliage and its especially large flowers, up to 2" in diameter, as well as its blooms' dark, blue-purple hue. While other cultivars have sought to improve upon the classic, 'Johnson's Blue' is an all-time favorite for a reason, producing its showy blooms from late spring into the fall, and adding attractive pops of color to shade gardens all around the world.
Reliably low-growing to only 12-18" tall with a spread up to 2' wide, 'Johnson's Blue' geranium is valued for its ornamental appearance, attractiveness to butterflies, and resistance to deer and rabbit damage. Growing well in both full sun and part shade, as well as in a variety of soil conditions and through seasonal drought, Geranium 'Johnson's Blue' is an excellent showy groundcover selection, with the added benefits of versatility, reliability, and low-maintenance growth all through the spring, summer, and fall.
