Echinacea purpurea 'White Swan' (Coneflower) Unity Grown

Echinacea purpurea ‘White Swan’ is an attractive, white-flowering cultivar of the typically purple-flowered Echinacea purpurea. Flowers are white with lightly drooping inflexed petals and a yellow to brown cone that contrasts well with the lighter petals. 'White Swan' blooms from early summer to fall, but fall flowers will fare better when earlier season flowers are deadheaded or harvested for cut flowers. No matter what time of year they're blooming, flowers are highly attractive to a number of pollinators, including important native bees and butterflies.

Echinacea purpurea ‘White Swan’ grows approximately 2-3' tall and spreads to 12-24" wide in medium sized clumps; spread can be affected by the plant's tendency to freely self-seed over time, and plants are true to seed, but unwanted spread can be limited by deadheading after blooms have begun to fade. White blooms attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators, and dried flower heads, if left intact, will attract birds with a heavy cache of seed. Note: Care should be taken with choosing a good planting location for Echinacea purpurea 'White Swan,' as some sources note that it may be more susceptible than other varieties to aster yellows, a transmissible plant disease that cause discoloration and malformation in flowers and leaves.
