Solidago juncea, also called early goldenrod, is a medium-sized, upright perennial, growing to 2-4' tall in medium-dry, well-draining soils anywhere with full sun to light shade. As the name implies, early goldenrod is set apart from other goldenrod species by its early bloom period; while most goldenrods produce their bright yellow flower spikes between September and October, the early goldenrod begins producing flowers from July to August, and occasionally blooms will last all through summer to the early fall.

As with other goldenrod species, Solidago juncea's attractive golden-yellow blooms are attractive to a number pollinators and have the added bonus of being mildly fragrant. After flowers are done blooming, persistent seeds also attract a variety of songbirds. Beyond its ornamental and pollinator value, however, early goldenrod is also tolerant of poor and heavy clay soils, drought, and deer damage, making it a great addition for any garden.
