Epimedium lishihchenii (Barrenwort)
Epimedium lishihchenii is a unique semi-evergreen perennial with elongated heart-shaped, deer resistant leaves that add visual appeal and texture to shade and part-shade gardens; also called commonly called barrenwort or bishop's hat due to the shape of its flowers, this species is named for Chinese botanist Li Shih Chen. Though rare to find in common cultivation, Epimedium lishihchenii is easy to grow and versatile enough to survive in many locations. In the spring months, barrenwort produces 4-spiked drooping flowers that are attractive to pollinators and add a splash of color to the early garden; in this case, Epimedium lishihchenii blooms are a pale yellow color that contrasts beautifully with darker green leaves.
Epimedium lishihchenii refers rich, well-drained soil on the drier side and performs best in locations with morning sun and afternoon shade, but will do well in full shade, and can tolerate a great number of site conditions, including shallow, rocky soils. Though not native to the US, barrenwort is an excellent option for smothering weeds throughout the year, since plants spread slowly but consistently, reach a manageable height of only 12-18", and maintain good leaf color through most of the fall and winter.
