Kosteletzkya virginica (Seashore Mallow)

Kosteletzkya virginica (syn. Kosteletzkya pentacarpos), commonly known as seashore mallow or Virginia saltmarsh mallow, is a medium to large attractive native perennial suited for sunny, moist to very wet sites like (as the name implies) salt marshes and seashores, as the species is very tolerant of brackish and salt waters. Growing as a collection of upright stems covered in halberd-shaped leaves, seashore mallow is well regarded for its summer blooms. Though smaller than their relative hibiscus, salt marsh mallow produces pink or white tropical-looking blossoms with yellow centers from July to September. These blooms are highly ornamental, and also serve to attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators.

Reaching mature sizes of only 3-4' tall and 2-3' wide, Kosteletzkya virginica makes for a great late-season living fence in wetter areas, as well as in wetland border plantings and rain gardens. Although native to swamps and salt marshes, seashore mallow will also do very well in the home garden if kept consistently moist.
