Solidago odora, otherwise known as sweet or fragrant goldenrod, is a medium-size, somewhat-upright perennial wildflower reaching heights of 2-5' tall with a spread of about 2'. When bruised or brushed, sweet goldenrod leaves give off a sweet, herbal, anise-like smell, which gives the plant its common name; leaves can be used in teas and were traditionally used in medicine. In the late summer and early fall, Solidago odora produces dense panicles of bright, golden-yellow flowers which are attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Once flowers have faded, seeds left behind are attractive to songbirds, but can also be used to reseed existing plants.

Sweet goldenrod primarily grows in clumps, making it less prone to spreading than other species of goldenrod, and it performs best in medium-dry soils in full sun, though it will also tolerate some light shade. With its relatively upright behavior and fragrant leaves, fragrant goldenrod is a great choice for seasonal garden borders, pollinator gardens, meadows, or for foundation planting, where its scent can be more regularly enjoyed.
