Monarda punctata, also called spotted bee balm, is an aromatic, upright perennial that ranges from only 6" to sometimes over three feet tall. Growing best in drier soils in full to part sun, Monarda punctata is a beebalm variety in the mint family, Lamiaceae, and is therefore clump forming, although it does not spread as aggressively as a true mint.
Popular with pollinators, the flowers of spotted bee balm bloom from mid summer into early fall, and the blooms themselves are small, and yellow with fine red spots. The flowers are surrounded by pale purple leaf-like bracts, and the combination of their varied colors, eye-catching bracts, and herbal aroma makes them a great choice for cut flowers.
