Mitchella repens, common called patridgeberry, is low-growing evergreen groundcover found in forest environments through the eastern half of the country. Instead of growing upward, patridgeberry tends to creep along the ground locations with part to full shade, but especially in areas with organically rich soil. Partridgeberry is evergreen and produces pairs of small white and pink-tinged flowers. Flowers are attractive to bumblebees, and when pollinated, a pair of flowers will produce a single red berry.
Although flavorless, berries are edible and contain a good helping of nutrients; their nutritional value makes them highly attractive to small mammals and birds, like skunks and mice, as well as turkeys, ruffed grouse, and bobwhite quails. Mitchella repens is also tolerate to drought conditions, but in periods of extended drought, will require additional watering.
