Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' is an ornamental, cool-season grass, originally hybridized from two species originally native to Europe and Asia. With plumes of purplish wheat-colored flowers on stems up to 5-6' tall in late spring and a spread of only 2-3', 'Karl Foerster' is an impressive ornamental grass, and a hardy pick for a variety of gardens. Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' grows best in moist, nutrient-rich soils that are kept consistently moist. Once established, 'Karl Foerster' feather reed grass tolerates perpetually wet sites, and its deer and rabbit resistant.
Beyond its ornamental value, Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' is also a great choice for supporting bird populations, as its persistent seed heads stick around through the fall and winter, feeding migratory birds. Though Calamagrostis is not a native plant, its attractive appearance and non-invasive behavior make it a great choice for a variety of home landscapes.
