Heptacodium miconioides, also called seven son or seven-son flower, is a deciduous small tree or large shrub, originally native to China, that has been introduced as a unique, occasionally rare ornamental selection throughout many areas. Noted for its even, soft green foliage in the spring and summer, and its showy, fragrant white flower clusters, seven-son flower draws its name from its seven-part clusters along branch tips which bloom in the late summer or early fall. Once flowers have finished blooming, petals begin to drop and leave behind deep, scarlet red sepals which add multi-season appeal for a few weeks through the fall.
Growing to a mature size of 15-20' tall and with a slightly more narrow spread of 8-10' wide, seven-son flower attracts pollinators and hummingbirds, and adds beautiful, graceful appeal to any outdoor space. Preferring average, fertile soils, but tolerant of a wide variety of well-draining soil types, Heptacodium miconiodes grows best in full sun or partial shade locations with medium-moisture, and works wonderfully as a specimen planting or centerpiece for a pollinator garden or themed garden in a variety of landscape types.
