Calycanthus x 'Aphrodite' is a hybrid cultivar of sweetshrub, a dense, deciduous shrub to small tree with rounded behavior that grows to about 5-10' tall and wide. The result of intentionally cross-breeding a southwestern US native (Calycanthus occidentalis) and a Chinese relative (Calycanthus chinensis), the resulting hybrid of these two species is said to have some of the biggest, showiest flowers among all of the sweetshrub varieties, producing large, woody, burgundy red flowers similar in shape to magnolia blossoms. Blooming from the mid summer to the early fall, flowers are attractive to a variety of beneficial insects, the most important of which are the beetles that the plant relies on for pollination. While many sweetshrub cultivars are noted for their fragrance, the fragrance of 'Aphrodite' flowers is highly variable, with some smelling like tropical fruit or bubblegum, and others having no fragrance at all.
Perhaps best known for its long-blooming tropical-looking flowers in the summer months, 'Aphrodite' sweetshrub adds an appealing exotic look to any temperate landscape. As a hybrid of two species from very different areas, 'Aphrodite' sweetshrub is highly adaptable to a variety of conditions, but performs best in full sun to partial shade conditions with moist, well-draining soil. Calycanthus x 'Aphrodite' is tolerant of heavier clay soils, occasional flooding, as well as full shade conditions, making it a great pick for any number of locations; in addition, its fragrance makes it highly resistant to deer damage, making it even more versatile for the home landscape. To maintain a compact shrub shape for 'Aphrodite,' instead of a more tree-like appearance, prune immediately after flowering, as new flowers will bloom on the previous season's growth.
