Thuja occidentalis 'Bobozam,' also called 'Mr. Bowling Ball,' is a unique, sage-green cultivar of compact arborvitae that is well suited for use as a specimen plant or in low borders. While many other arborvitae varieties grow like Christmas trees in shape and habit, 'Mr. Bowling Ball' is a stand-out: slow growing to only 24-30" tall and wide, this variety produces soft, needled foliage in a dense, compact habit. Unlike many arborvitaes, 'Mr. Bowling Ball' has variable foliage, sometimes producing scaly, fan-shaped sprays of foliage like other arbs, while at others producing more needle-like foliage more reminiscent of a soft-needled juniper or spruce.

Thuja occidentalis 'Bobozam' is an excellent specimen plant for collectors or for anyone looking for the consistent hardiness and versatility of an eastern arborvitae in a compact footprint. Perfect for forming into hedges, growing along foundations, or adding into existing beds, 'Mr. Bowling Ball' is pleasantly fragrant, prized for its consistently evergreen foliage, and does well in a variety of conditions including sites with full sun and part shade, exposure to salt spray, and areas that hold onto a bit of extra moisture. Thuja occidentalis 'Bobozam' prefers medium-moist, well-draining soils and, due to its smaller stature, is less drought tolerant than other varieties, so this should be taken into account when choosing a good planting location.
