Carpinus betulus 'Fastigiata' (European Hornbeam)
Carpinus betulus 'Fastigiata' is a formal, upright variety of European hornbeam, a small to medium understory tree common as a consistent, pyramidal ornamental tree the world over. Typically growing to a mature size of 30-50' tall and 20-30' wide, 'Fastigiata' hornbeam typically forms an upright, columnar or pyramidal habit with a strong central leader and small leaves on tight, upright branches. As trees mature, they take on a large teardrop-like shape, wider near the base and narrower near the top, adding consistent, attractive appeal to driveways, street plantings, or specimen collections. Since they're understory trees when found in the wild, 'Fastigiata' European hornbeam is adaptable to both full sun and partial shade, adding even more to its versatility.
As an ornamental tree selection, 'Fastigiata' European hornbeam is show-stopping thanks to its yellow and orange fall foliage. Though not a native tree, Carpinus betulus 'Fastigiata' is still an ecologically valuable selection, attracting amphibians, birds, and small mammals to take shelter among its tight branch structure and feed on its small nut-like seeds through the late summer and fall. As a member of the ironwood group of trees, Carpinus betulus is noted for its especially dense, heavy wood and strong structure, meaning less clean-up in the yard, and better tolerance of strong Eastern Shore winds.
