The New Hanover husk cherry is a unique cultivar of husk cherry, noted for its incredible flavor and beating all other entries at an American Institute of Wine and Food tasting. This cultivar is also noted for its interesting botanical history, as it was preserved by heirloom seed collector Katie Hoffman Slonaker, based out of south-central Pennsylvania.
Mature plants can grow to 3-4' tall and wide as small bushes, and although they are annual in the northeast, they are perennial in more southern ranges.
