Unity introduces two strains of tasty, ornamental purple basil for this season:
'Rosie' is an improved version of the 'Rubin' cultivar of purple basil, and its noted for its uniform, upright growth habit, and makes for an excellent ornamental basil plant, especially when lavender-colored flower spikes start blooming.
'Prospera Red DMR' is a dark purple variety bred for better resistance to downy mildew (hence the DMR) and fusarium wilt, resulting in healthier crops of basil. Leaves are general large and purple-black, but some plants may grow in bicolor green and dark red.
Although ornamental, both 'Rosie' and 'Prospera Red DMR' basils have the same flavor as normal basil cultivars, with a profile similar to a milder sweet basil. Both varieties grow to 18-24" tall and wide, and leaves and stems can be harvested at any time since regular pruning will prolong the plant's life.
