Deschampsia cespitosa, also called tufted hair grass, is a native perennial grass that produces fine hair-like flowers that rise two to three feet over the grass's low, mounded foliage, bringing its height to four or five feet. Deschampsia cespitosa thrives in average, well-drained soils in part shade; although it can grow in full sun and full shade, it may discolor with too much direct sun, and may produce less flowers in full shade.

Tufted hair grass is semi-evergreen in mild climates and and is found in cool, wet settings like estuaries, floodplain forests, and marshes in the wild, making it useful for stabilizing disturbed sites, streambanks and shorelines. Tufted hair grass is also a valuable species for biodiversity projects, and attracts birds and wildlife that eat seed from its persistent winter flower spikes, as well as acting as a host plant for a variety of larval butterflies and moths.
