'Goldtau,' as a cultivar of Deschampsia cespitosa, is a compact, clump-forming, semi-evergreen, grass with finely textured leaves, and thin stems topped with delicate, airy flowers. From the fine blooms in shades of silver, purple, and green, late summer and fall seed heads form a brassy, golden cloud over the foliage forming into a low, dense tussock up to about two feet tall.

While 'Goldtau' is a cool season gress, it prefers partial shade and moist conditions in warmer climates. During summer, 'Goldtau' is an excellent ornamental grass, but it also provides a ton winter interest, with persistent upright growth and semi-evergreen foliage depending on the winter climate. With these features, 'Goldtau' is also a beautiful, nontraditional choice for cut flower arrangements. Sturdy in a variety of locations around the home, Deschampsia cespitosa 'Goldtau' is additionally resistant to deeper shade, drought, and deer damage.
