Tiarella cordifolia 'Running Tapestry,' also called spreading foamflower, is a low-growing semi-evergreen perennial wildflower, differing from the parent species with its more profuse white blooms and its tendency to rapidly spread and fill an area with a fluffy white running tapestry of flowers and red-veined foliage that can easily out-compete weeds to form an excellent groundcover mass. Closely related to, and occasionally mistaken for Heuchera species, both plants are well-regarded for their ornamental, occasionally variegated foliage and their heavy shade tolerance.
Tiarella cordifolia 'Running Tapestry' grows best in part to full-shade in moist, organically rich soils and forms small clumps up to 10-12" tall and up to 2' wide, spreading via runners more rapidly than other foamflower cultivars. Though foamflower should not be allowed to dry out, as its leaves will suffer, it should also not be left in areas with poorly draining, compacted soils, as its shallow roots can easily start to break down. White flower spikes are attractive to bumblebees and other pollinators, and semi-evergreen foliage adds multi-season groundcover appeal with attractive red tints in the fall and winter.
