Epimedium 'Black Sea' is a unique cultivar prized known for its attractive black swirl patterns in the green foliage which appears in fall when temperatures drop. In spring, the spreading clumps are topped with masses of small light-yellow and peach-toned flowers held on airy, 14" tall stems above the foliage. Epimedium spreads easily, and you may end up with a three-foot clump of 'Black Sea' in as little as four or five years.
Easily grown in acidic, well-drained, medium to dry soils in part to full shade, 'Black Sea' tolerates full shade, but foliage will burn in full afternoon sun. Foliage will remain semi evergreen in warmer climates, but it may be best to cut back foliage in late winter to maintain appearance; epimedium is an especially good addition under trees in woodland gardens.
