'Luxuriant' is a hybrid cultivar of bleeding heart, a common, shade-loving perennial with a beautiful, arching growth habit. Though most bleeding hearts are known more for their showy pink flowers than anything else, the 'Luxuriant' cultivar has the same great spring flowers with the added benefit of finely divided, fern-like foliage, adding additional beauty and ornamental value to an already famous garden favorite.
Best used in in a shaded border or woodland garden, Dicentra x 'Luxuriant' bleeding heart grows to a compact height of only 12-15" tall and 12-18" wide with a mounded, spreading habit. As a bleeding heart hybrid, 'Luxuriant' still prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil and, although it will die back through the heat of the summer, it makes an excellent ephemeral addition to any spring landscape with its striking fern-like leaves and its showy spikes of pink, heart-shaped flowers. This bleeding heart selection is a true U.S. hybrid, occuring as a result of the open pollination of two Pacific coast native Dicentra species, as well as the eastern native Dicentra eximia.
