Clematis virginiana (Virgin's Bower)

Clematis virginiana is a showy, perennial, vining wildflower native to much of the eastern half of the United States and Canada, and is known by a variety of common names including woodbine, virgin's bower, devil's darning needles, and old man's beard. Most of these names come from the plant's beautiful 4-petaled white flowers in the late summer and fall, which eventually turn to incredibly showy, white-tasseled fruits, resembling needles or hair. Virgin's bower grows well in a variety of light conditions, which makes it ideal for planting in a variety of locations.

With support and enough room to grow, Clematis virginiana can grow up to 15-20 feet tall and three to six feet wide, and late season flowers offer nectar to a variety of fall pollinators, even including hummingbirds. Although virgin's bower is not entirely resistant to deer or rabbit browsing, it will resist damage fairly well with its rapid growth behavior. In addition, it's best to choose a planting location for Clematis virginiana with care, as it may overtake small areas, and because it may be poisonous if consumed by small animals and children.
