Helenium autumnale 'HayDay™ Red' (Sneezeweed)
Helenium autumnale 'HayDay™ Red' is a striking cultivar of sneezeweed, an upright, clump-forming perennial wildflower commonly found in moist areas along bodies of water, wet disturbed areas like ditches and roadside pools, and low-lying meadows. Growing to a compact size of only 12-18" tall and wide, and preferring areas with full sun and medium to wet, well-drained, fertile soils, 'HayDay™ Red' sneezeweed produces profuse multicolor daisy-like blooms from mid-summer into the early autumn. Flowering in gorgeous, warm shades of red and orange with occasional golden-yellow filigree on the petal margins, flowers are similar in shape to those of the parent species, and still attract a variety of pollinator species, especially butterflies.
Small enough and versatile enough to grow just about anywhere, Helenium autumnale 'HayDay™ Red' is generally avoided by deer due to its texture, and is semi-tolerant of over-watering, preferring things a bit drier than its parent species due to its smaller size. 'HayDay™ Red' is upright in habit, showy, and can be dead-headed or regfularly harvested for cut flowers to encourage reblooming throughout the autumn months. This showy specimen of sneezeweed makes for an especially excellent accent for pollinator gardens, low borders and small flower beds, and as a margin plant for ponds and property lines, where it can attract butterflies, songbirds, and all manner of pollinators while it provides its attractive color to the landscape.
