Calycanthus x 'Aphrodite' is a hybrid cultivar of sweetshrub, a dense, deciduous shrub to small tree with rounded behavior that grows to about 5-10' tall and wide. The 'Aphrodite' cultivar is a hybrid of a southwestern US native (Calycanthus occidentalis) and a Chinese relative (Calycanthus chinensis). The hybrid of these two species is said to have some of the biggest, showiest flowers among all of the sweetshrub varieties, producing large, woody, burgundy red flowers similar in shape to magnolia blossoms. Flowers are attractive to a variety of pollinators, the most of important of which are beetles, and the whole plant, including fragrant leaves, is resistant to deer browsing. While many sweetshrub cultivars are noted for their fragrance, the fragrance of 'Aphrodite' flowers is highly variable, with some smelling like tropical fruit or bubblegum, and others having no fragrance at all.

Perhaps best known for its long-blooming tropical-looking flowers in the summer months, 'Aphrodite' sweetshrub adds an appealing exotic look to any temperate landscape. As a hybrid of two species from very different areas, 'Aphrodite' sweetshrub is highly adaptable to a variety of conditions, but performs best in full sun to partial shade conditions with moist, well-draining soil. Calycanthus x 'Aphrodite' is tolerant of heavier clay soils, occasional flooding, as well as full shade conditions, making it a great pick for any number of locations. To maintain a compact shrub shape for 'Aphrodite,' instead of a more tree-like appearance, prune immediately after flowering, as new flowers will bloom on the previous season's growth.

Marylanders Plant Trees

From the Maryland Department of Natural Resources:

"We launched Marylanders Plant Trees in 2009 to encourage citizens and organizations to partner with the State to plant new trees. Today, citizens can still take advantage of our coupon program to receive $25 off the purchase of a native tree at 86 participating nurseries across the State. The State cost of $20 per coupon is funded through a settlement from a major power generator for Clean Air Act violations, in partnership with the Office of the Attorney General, and Maryland’s participating tree vendors are generously absorbing the remaining $5.

Trees must be planted in the state of Maryland to qualify for $25 off coupon.
Wholesale customers do not qualify.
