Thuja occidentalis 'Hetz's Midget' is a compact, globe-shaped cultivar of arborvitae that adds all the appeal of the famously hardy and versatile evergreen to smaller spaces in a teeny-tiny form. Well-suited for use in the home garden in foundation plantings, low borders, and containers, 'Hetz's Midget' grows to only 2-4' tall and wide with the same dark gree, scaly foliage of many other varieties. While this cultivar's unique compact habit makes it less desirable for use as a privacy screen or large border, 'Hetz's Midget' is just as adaptable to the variety of soil types and site conditions that its larger relatives can handle.

Thuja occidentalis 'Hetz's Midget'prefers full to partial sun, and average soil moisture and consistency, but these hardy specimens can tolerate clay soils consistencies, cold, and drought once established, as well as salt and high winds. Although it does not flower, Thuja occidentalis 'Nigra' attracts small birds and wildlife by offering cover and shelter; 'Nigra' also acts as a host plant for a variety of moth and butterfly larvae, adding ecological appeal alongside its compact, uniform aesthetic value.
