Symphyotrichum lateriflorum (syn. Aster lateriflorus), commonly called calico aster or side-flower aster, is a medium-sized scrubby wildflower commonly found in moist part-shade areas like low woodlands, stream margins, or damp, low-lying prairie areas. The ‘Lady in Black’ cultivar of side-flower aster is so-named for its darker green-purple to purple-black foliage and attractive pink and dark purple tinted blooms. Typically producing telltale yellow and white aster-like flowers, ‘Lady in Black’ produces profuse small flowers along the sides of its stems from early to mid-autumn; with the plant’s bushy appearance, the ‘Lady in Black’ cultivar has an attractive multi-use appearance with foliage that remains attractive from first emergence till first frost.

Commonly used for naturalized wildflower plantings in full sun to part-shade, ‘Lady in Black’ makes an excellent contrast against other green-leaved asters, attracts many kinds of pollinators and butterflies, and can be effectively used in groups or masses, like backing hedges or as an accent along walkways in pollinator or meadow gardens. Symphyotrichum lateriflorum is drought tolerant, deer resistant, and works well both when left natural – where its seeds can be left to benefit songbirds – or when deadheaded, as its blooms make for an excellent, long-lasting cut flower.
