Gaillardia x grandiflora 'Arizona Red Shades' is an attractive hybrid blanket flower cultivar noted for its, bold, dark orange and red daisy-like flowers that bloom from early summer into fall; colorful flowers are aesthetically pleasing and are popular among butterflies and bees too. Although a hybrid, Gaillardia x grandiflora is a cross of two native North American species, Gaillardia aristata and Gaillardia pulchella. With a compact size of only 10-12" tall and wide, 'Arizona Red Shades' is an excellent choice for anywhere with rocky or sandy soils, and it grows well in a variety of climates thanks to its hardy North American heritage.
Gaillardia is drought tolerant, deer resistant, and hardy to a variety of conditions, though it performs best in dry to medium, well-drained soil with full sun. With low water requirements and a sun-loving nature, 'Arizona Red Shades' is the perfect addition to a hot, dry pollinator planting or to a rock garden where its blooms and attractive green foliage can be put on full display; alternatively, due to its showy blooms and spreading behavior, this blanketflower makes an excellent low border or accent in front of larger plants. In addition to its drought tolerance, this hybrid blanket flower cultivar has high salt tolerance, making it an ideal choice for coastal areas.
