Kalmia latifolia 'Sarah' is a showy variety of mountain laurel, a native, broad-leaf evergreen shrub found in well-draining woodland areas throughout much of the American east and mid-Atlantic region. Growing to 4-5' tall and wide, the 'Sarah' variety of mountain laurel is well known for its showy flower clusters and ornamental foliage, with clusters of attractive bubblegum-pink flowers in the late spring and early summer, as well as some burgundy fall coloration on the foliage later in the season. Well-known and beloved for their glossy foliage and striking blooms, Kalmia latifolia can be a bit picky in the home garden, but the work is well-rewarded with spectacular, long-lasting blooms from the late spring through the early summer, and enhanced ornamental appearance through the fall and winter.
Typically found in the wild in upland wooded areas, Kalmia latifolia 'Sarah' prefers shade or partial sun conditions, and absolutely requires acidic, moist, well-draining soils to thrive; heavy clay soils or sites that tend to sit a bit wetter can quickly result in root-rot and declining health for plants. Once established and happy, the 'Sarah' variety's blooms attract all sorts of pollinators, including native bees and butterflies, and the plant's red-tinted blooms may attract hummingbirds too! As Kalmia latifolia is a toxic plant, care should be taken with choosing an ideal planting location, especially on properties with small children or curious pets. This same quality, however, makes mountain laurel virtually untouched by deer and rabbit damage, allowing their ornamental value to shine year-round, especially when accented by its burgundy-toned leaf edges in the fall and early winter. In the home garden 'Sarah' responds well to occasional pruning, and is tolerant of urban conditions. For planting in harsher, windier spots or in higher levels of sun, try adding a thick layer of mulch around the base of the 'Sarah' shrub for better moisture retention and insulation.
