Kalmia latifolia 'Elf' is a dwarf variety of mountain laurel, a native, broad-leaf evergreen shrub found in well-draining woodland areas throughout much of the American east and mid-Atlantic region. Growing to just 2-3' tall and 2-4' wide, the 'Elf' variety of mountain laurel is well regarded for its compact, low-maintenance habit and its soft, white to pale pink blossoms in the spring and early summer. Well-known and beloved for their glossy foliage and striking blooms, Kalmia latifolia can be a bit picky in the home garden, but the work is well-rewarded with spectacular, long-lasting blooms from the late spring through the early summer, with flower clusters presenting as especially dense on such a low-growing variety.
Typically found in the wild in upland wooded areas, Kalmia latifolia 'Elf' prefers shade or partial sun conditions, and absolutely requires acidic, moist, well-draining soils to thrive; heavy clay soils or sites that tend to sit a bit wetter can quickly result in root-rot and declining health for plants. Once established and happy, the 'Elf' variety's blooms attract all sorts of pollinators, including native bees and butterflies; occasionally 'Elf' mountain laurel can also attract hummingbirds, though its blooms may not be as eye-catching in the garden. As Kalmia latifolia is a toxic plant, care should be taken with choosing an ideal planting location, especially on properties with small children or curious pets. This same quality, however, makes mountain laurel virtually untouched by deer and rabbit damage, allowing their ornamental value to shine year-round. In the home garden 'Elf' typically requires very little pruning, but responds well to pruning if t begins to spread too wide. For planting in harsher, windier spots or in higher levels of sun, try adding a thick layer of mulch around the base of the 'Elf' mountain laurel shrub for better moisture retention and insulation.
