Kalmia latifolia 'Peppermint' is a showy variety of mountain laurel, a native, broad-leaf evergreen shrub found in well-draining woodland areas throughout much of the American east and mid-Atlantic region. Growing to 3-5' tall and wide, the 'Peppermint' variety of mountain laurel is named for its showy flower clusters, with small blooms maturing to white or pale pink, and accented by candy-stripe patterns of red-purple filigree. Well known for their attractive foliage and striking blooms, Kalmia latifolia can be a bit picky in the home garden, but the work is well-rewarded with spectacular, long-lasting blooms.
Typically found in the wild in more upland wooded areas, Kalmia latifolia 'Peppermint' prefers shade or partial sun conditions, and absolutely requires acidic, moist, well-draining soils to thrive. Heavy clay soils or sites that tend to sit a bit wetter can quickly result in root-rot and declining health for plants. Blooming from late spring well through to the middle of summer, the 'Peppermint' cultivar's unique flowers attract a wide variety of pollinators, including native bees and butterflies, and the cup-shaped blooms with red accents can occasionally attract hummingbirds too! As Kalmia latifolia is a toxic plant, care should be taken with choosing an ideal planting location, especially on properties with small children or curious pets. This same quality, however, makes mountain laurel virtually untouched by deer and rabbit damage, allowing their ornamental value to shine year-round. 'Peppermint' is fairly compact, responds well to occasional pruning, and is tolerant of urban conditions. For planting in harsher, windier spots or in higher levels of sun, try adding a thick layer of mulch around the base of the 'Peppermint' shrub for better moisture retention and insulation.
