Muhlenbergia capillaris, commonly known by the playful moniker of Muhly grass, is a warm-season perennial grass noted for its soft green foliage and striking late season color. Though Muhly grass performs best in moist to medium-dry, well-drained soils, it is tolerant of poor, rocky soils, high heat and humidity, and drought, making it a great choice for low maintenance, drier landscapes. In addition, Muhly grass can grow well in containers, on steep banks, and in areas with high salt content, all of which make it a great grass for rehabilitation projects and slope stabilization.
Also called pink hair grass, Muhlenbergia capillaris grows to about 3' tall and wide, and produces large masses of airy, pink inflorescences in the early fall, which can grow up to over a foot in length, adding a ton of ornamental appeal in through the end of the warm season. Pink flowers eventually turn to tan seed plumes in winter, providing valuable forage for birds and off-season interest.
These Muhlenbergia capillaris containers were grown from the ground up here at Unity Church Hill Nursery.
