Magnolia x 'Stellar Ruby' is a hybrid evergreen large shrub or small tree in the Magnolia genus; created as a controlled cross of two stunning magnolias (Magnolia figo var. skinneriana and Magnolia figo var. crassipies) the result is a gorgeous, glossy, colorful specimen plant for a variety of locations. Using the fragrant flowers of both magnolia parents as a base, 'Stellar Ruby' is a glossy tree or large shrub with gorgeous leaves and large, stunning wine-purple flowers with a unique fragrance. As Magnolia figo is occasionally referred to as a banana magnolia, and since Magnolia figo var. crassipies is a variety known for its uniquely spicy and showy flowers, the resulting cross has uniquely scented flowers with a heady banana-like aroma, and hardiness to Zone 6.

Magnolia x 'Stellar Ruby' grows to about 10-12' tall with a mounded form and a spread ofonly 4-6' wide, resulting in a beautiful specimen plant, but also in a large shrub that works well for naturalized hedges or borders. 'Stellar Ruby' grows well in both full sun and partial shade, and prefers well-draining medium-moist soil but has a wide tolerance for different soil types. As with all magnolias, the 'Stellar Ruby' cultivar's flowers are highly attractive to a number of pollinators (especially unique native beetles), and eventually flowers turn to seed cones that are attractive to a number of bird species; unlike some magnolias, 'Stellar Ruby' can also be encouraged to rebloom by pruning trees back after their first bloom in the spring. Though 'Stellar Ruby,' as a hybrid of two non-native magnolia varieties is an introduced cultivar, it doesn't present risk of become invasive, and offers a lot to any landscape or backyard garden in terms of ornamental and ecological value.

Marylanders Plant Trees

From the Maryland Department of Natural Resources:

"We launched Marylanders Plant Trees in 2009 to encourage citizens and organizations to partner with the State to plant new trees. Today, citizens can still take advantage of our coupon program to receive $25 off the purchase of a native tree at 86 participating nurseries across the State. The State cost of $20 per coupon is funded through a settlement from a major power generator for Clean Air Act violations, in partnership with the Office of the Attorney General, and Maryland’s participating tree vendors are generously absorbing the remaining $5.

Trees must be planted in the state of Maryland to qualify for $25 off coupon.
Wholesale customers do not qualify.
