Dryopteris marginalis, also called marginal wood fern or leatherwood fern, is a reliable evergreen groundcover selection for woodland gardens, requiring minimal maintenance. Growing to 20-36" tall and slightly more narrow, marginal wood fern is native to a large chunk of the eastern US, and thrives in a variety of locations as long as it is provided with consistent moisture and part to full shade. Fronds are vibrant to olive green and provide important shelter for woodland creatures like frogs and small mammals.
With an enduring nature, this native species is especially tolerant of cold when grown in forest gardens, thanks to falling leaves in the autumn. Dryopteris marginalis can be a bit sensitive to heat, so shaded woodland planting is key. Once established, marginal wood fern also tolerates dry shade conditions.
This selection of Dryopteris marginalis was grown from the ground up at Unity Church Hill Nursery.
