NewGen® 'Freedom' is one of the newest and best hybrid boxwood cultivars on the market today. Patented in 2019, NewGen® Freedom is noted for its vigor and high growth rate among other boxwood cultivars, as well as its better resilience and resistance to two of the major pests of boxwood plants: boxwood blight and boxwood leafminer. This cultivar is best grown in part-shade and moist, well-drained loams, though NewGen® 'Freedom' will tolerate any level of light; green foliage may bronze slightly in winter, especially when exposed to direct sunlight, and foliage in full shade may be less dense.

While the entire NewGen® line of boxwoods has better resistance to common pests, sizes and growth rates can greatly differ between different cultivars; 'Freedom' typically grows to an appropriate low hedge height around 3.5', but if given more time, it will mature to a bushier size of around 5' tall and wide. In the spring, NewGen® Freedom produces inconspicuous white-green flowers that are attractive to pollinators like bees and hoverflies, adding ecological value to its hedge, border, and foundation planting appeal. With the added benefits of disease and pest resistance, a hedge planted with NewGen® Freedom boxwoods should maintain its attractive appearance for many years to come.
