Liatris spicata 'Kobold' is an excellent cultivar of blazing star noted for its compact growth habit and showy, vivid magenta blooms. Although Liatris spicata typically grows to two to five feet tall, the 'Kobold' cultivar grows to a much more manageable size of only 18-30" tall, perfect for smaller spaces, border beds, and compact pollinator gardens. In addition to growth habit, 'Kobold' produces flowers from mid-summer to early fall in vibrant shades of pink, purple, and magenta that have to be seen to be believed.
'Kobold' Liatris grows best in full to part-sun in drier soils, and is not especially picky about soil consistency. With tolerance to drought and deer damage, as well as high ecological value to butterflies and all sorts of pollinators, 'Kobold' will make an excellent addition to any pollinator garden or home landscape. Flowers are excellent for cut arrangements, and cutting back after flowering may encourage reblooming; alternatively, flower spikes can be left in place to offer seed to songbirds.
