Dryopteris marginalis, also called leatherwood fern or marginal wood fern, is a reliable evergreen selection for woodland gardens, requiring minimal maintenance while providing good color and year round interest. Growing to 2-3' tall and slightly more narrow in spread, leatherwood fern is native to a large chunk of the eastern US, and thrives in a variety of locations as long as it is provided with consistent moisture and partial to full shade. Fronds are vibrant to olive green in color and, though not necessarily beneficial for pollinators, provide important shelter for woodland creatures like frogs and small mammals.
With an enduring nature, this native species is especially tolerant of cold when grown in forest gardens, thanks to falling leaves in the autumn. Leatherwood fern will typically maintain good leaf color throughout fall and winter, with mature fronds beginning to die back in late winter or early spring to make way for new growth. Dryopteris marginalis can be a bit sensitive to heat and drought, losing its color and mass during dry spells in the winter, so shaded woodland planting is key. Once established in small colonies, marginal wood fern also will tolerate slightly drier shade conditions as well.
