Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' is an ornamental, cool-season grass hybridized from two species originally native to Europe and Asia. Noted for its attractive plumes of purple-tinted wheat-colored flowers, 'Karl Foerster' produces foliage up to 3-4' tall with flower spikes an extra 1-2' taller in late spring, over a spread of only 2-3' wide, 'resulting in an impressive ornamental grass that's a hardy pick for a variety of gardens. Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' grows best in average, nutrient-rich soils that are kept consistently moist. Once established, 'Karl Foerster' feather reed grass can tolerate wetter conditions, and is deer and rabbit resistant.

Beyond its ornamental value, Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' is also a great choice for supporting bird populations, as its persistent seed heads stick around through the fall and winter, feeding migratory birds. Though this Calamagrostis hybrid is not a native species for North America, its attractive appearance and non-invasive behavior make it a great choice for a variety of home landscapes. In addition, dried flowers spikes make an excellent addition to arrangements and throughout the fall and winter landscapes, adding multi-season interest.
