Juniperus chinensis 'Spartan' is a cultivar of Chinese juniper, an evergreen conifer originally native to eastern Asia. Typically a bushy, conical tree that grows up 50-60' tall, the 'Spartan' cultivar is noted for its dwarf growth habit, which makes it perfect for smaller yards, windbreaks, and hedges. 'Spartan' grows to only 15-20' tall and about 5' wide, with a narrow, spike or cone-shaped profile.

Growing best in a variety of medium-moist, well-drained soils Chinese junipers are dioecious, meaning that individual plants can be male or female; males junipers produce pollen cones while female plants produce small, blue-black like berry cones giving winter interest. With a narrow growth habit perfect for adding verticality to a garden, 'Spartan' juniper makes for an excellent addition to privacy screens, borders, windbreaks, corner plantings near structures, or even topiary. As an added bonus, hedges and borders of 'Spartan' juniper are resistant to drought, cold, and deer damage.

Marylanders Plant Trees

From the Maryland Department of Natural Resources:

"We launched Marylanders Plant Trees in 2009 to encourage citizens and organizations to partner with the State to plant new trees. Today, citizens can still take advantage of our coupon program to receive $25 off the purchase of a native tree at 86 participating nurseries across the State. The State cost of $20 per coupon is funded through a settlement from a major power generator for Clean Air Act violations, in partnership with the Office of the Attorney General, and Maryland’s participating tree vendors are generously absorbing the remaining $5.

Trees must be planted in the state of Maryland to qualify for $25 off coupon.
Wholesale customers do not qualify.
