Scutellaria incana, commonly called downy or hoary skullcap, is a common upright wildflower native to full and part sun locations in much of the Southeastern US. Typically found in open woodlands and on slopes and streambanks, downy skullcap grows up to three feet tall and produces blue to purple two-lipped blooms from the mid summer to the early fall that some say resemble small helmets or skullcaps. As a mint relative, Scutellaria incana can be identified by its square stems and fragrant, ovate leaves.

Downy skullcap is a hardy plant, tolerant of drought and dry soils as well as heavy clay soils, making it a great pick for locations with a lot of hot, dry sun like southern facing beds or rock gardens. Since it also tolerates part shade, hoary skullcap is also a versatile pick for woodland gardens and dappled pollinator gardens too. Scutellaria incana is a great choice for attracting bumblebees especially, but makes a wonderful choice for ornamental plantings in a variety of locations.
