Chrysogonum virginianum (Goldenstar) Unity Grown

Chrysogonum virginianum, commonly called goldenstar, is a low-growing woodland groundcover plant also called "green and gold," for its striking colors. In the early spring, goldenstar produces 6-8” tall dark green foliage and plentiful golden yellow flowers shortly after the foliage reaches its maximum height, and sporadically through the warm season afterward. Flowers are attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, and after flowers begin to fade, they set seed that is additionally attractive to songbirds.

Due to its spreading nature and its long-lived semi-evergreen foliage, this plant is a great choice for weed-blocking groundcover, and has the added benefit of being tolerant to deer and rabbit damage as well as foot traffic. Chrysogonum virginianum prefers partial sun and moist but well-drained soil, though it is not picky about soil consistency, making it an excellent choice for any part-shade area in need of filler material or mat-forming groundcover.
